For more than thirty years he led the Troy State University to hights of greatness and academic excellence. A member and Past President of the prestigious American Band Director's Association, his ensembles played for elite events such as the ABA, the CBDNA, and the SEUS. He is a lifetime President of the National Band Association. Two buildings on the Troy University campus bear his name including the John M. Long School of Music. Prior to arriving at Troy, he led the Robert E. Lee Band of Montgomery, Alabama to national acclaim. He is the only band director in the nation to receive the Kennedy Center Award. He has trained more high school band directors than any other teacher in the United States.
