Mr. Harry Simon

Harry Simon ( 1926-1988) was the band director for the Onteora Central High School in Boiceville, New York. He received the Bachelor of Science in Music Education degree from the State University of New York at Fredonia in 1949. He pursued graduate studies in music education at the State University of New York in Potsdam and the State University of New York in New Paltz. During the years 1944 and 1945 he attended the United States Navy School of Music. Mr. Simon was a Musician Second Class in the United States Navy from 1944-1946 where he received an Honorable Discharge in 1946. He was included in the 1973-74 edition of “Outstanding Educators in America”. In 1974 he was included in the “International Who’ Who In Music”. He received the “Page One Award” for the Kingston Newspaper Guild in 1962. Mr. Simon was a member of the Music Educators National Conference and the American Federation of Musicians. His career at Onteora spanned for 36 years from the high school's opening until his retirement in June of 1988. Under his direction, the Onteora Central High School Band enoyed a series of awards from appearances at professional football games to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York to the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. His band was filmed for a Pepsi commercial in Kingston. Simon once told reporters that he considered himself lucky to be involved in a profession he loved.
