Dr. John M. Long is the Director Emeritus of the Troy University Bands in Troy, Alabama.  A former high school band director for more than fifteen years, he organized the famed Robert E. Lee High School of Montgomery, Alabama where he led it to national honors including winning in four national championships.

In 1965 he became the Director of Bands at Troy University where he held this position until his retirement in 1995.  He would rise to the level of Dean of the Colleges of Arts & Sciences and Dean of the School of Fine Arts.  A member of the prestigious American Band Masters Association, he was elected into the Hall of Fame for Distinguished Band Conductors in 1995.  He has the distinction of having trained more high school band directors than any other music educator in the nation.  He is internationally sought as a clinician and adjudicator.
