A R McAllister was Director of the Joliet (Illinois) Township High School and Junior College Band. Additionally, he was the president of Illinois School Band Association, president National School Band Association, member American Bandmasters' Association, director High School Band at Interlochen, director University of Wisconsin Clinic Band 1931-32 and director of the Intermountain Clinic Band 1932-34 In 1913 A. R. McAllister was a shop teacher in the Joliet Township High School. That year the Board of Education assigned him to the position of Band Director of the High School Band. We all know the history of the High School Band after A. R. McAllister assumed the reign. They won many national championships, and he was one of the founding fathers of the Illinois School Band Association and also one of its past presidents. Greatness is measured by achievement. On this premise, the Joliet Grade School Band takes rank as the greatest grade school band in history. No band through the years has been able to match the accomplishments of this great organization, which has virtually written the record books of contests while establishing a system of music education which has gained nation-wide fame.
