Frank Butenschon retired in 1997 as the Supervisor of Music for the Berrien County School System Georgia. Prior to this service, he was the band director at Guntersville High School and Oxford High School (Alabama) and Berrien County High School, Vidalia High School and Valdosta High School (Georgia). During his 17 year tenure at Valdosta, he led the band to numerous national honors including the National Cherry Blossom festival in Washington, D.C.; the Greatest Bands in Dixie; the Miami International Field Champion; the Largi Invitational Champions; the Festival of States National Field Champions; the Little Big Horn Grand Champions; and a host of others. Under his direction, the Valdosta Band enrollment increased from 62 to over 600 members. He conceived and chaired the Southern Open Band Competition in Valdosta, Georgia and was the first Georgia recipient of the Citation of Excellence from the National Band Association. He has served as a clinician and band adjudicator in Canada, Mexico and all across the United States. February 5, 1970 was named Frank Butenschon Day in Valdosta, Georgia.
